Mir Structural Dynamics Experiment (MISDE)

Researchers will attempt to determine how the Mir Space Station responds to structural forces, i.e. how the station moves, bends, twists, etc. during exposure to vibrational forces. The MiSDE is an instrument designed to measure the structural vibration caused by key events such as the impact of the Shuttle docking with the Mir or the firing of the space vehicle's positioning thrusters. Centaur Upper Stage

Centaur is a rocket stage designed for use as the upper stage of space launch vehicles. Centaur boosts its satellite payload to geosynchronous orbit or, in the case of an interplanetary space probe, to or near to escape velocity. Centaur was the world's first high-energy upper stage, burning liquid hydrogen (LH2) and liquid oxygen (LOX).
A new version, the Centaur-G, was developed for use with the Space Shuttle. It was optimized for installation in the Orbiter payload bay by increasing the hydrogen tank diameter to 14 feet while retaining the 10-foot-diameter (3.0 m) oxygen tank. Its initial mission was to boost the Galileo scientific probe to Jupiter.
The Centaur, as carried in the Shuttle payload bay, required an extremely complex airborne support system, which was integrated into the Centaur Integrated Support System, the CISS. In addition to controlling Centaur pressurization in flight, the CISS had to be able to dump propellants overboard quickly in the event of a Return To Launch Site Abort, a capability needed to permit the Orbiter to land safely. After the Challenger accident, NASA realized that it was far too risky to fly the Centaur on the Shuttle.

GeoLite satellite

 GeoLITE is an advanced technology demonstration satellite with a laser communications experiment and an operational UHF communications mission. The GeoLITE program also employs streamlined acquisition and design-to-cost methodologies to complete the satellite development, integration and launch. The satellite is based on a modular bus design with multi-mission capabilities.
The satellite was designed and built in 3 1/2 years using streamlined program methodologies by TRW Space & Electronics, Redondo Beach, a subsidiary of TRW, Inc. for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO).

Genesis Sample Return Spacecraft

Genesis was a NASA sample return probe which collected a sample of solar wind and returned it to Earth for analysis. It was the first NASA sample return mission to return material since the Apollo Program, and the first to return material from beyond the orbit of the Moon. Genesis was launched on August 8, 2001, and crash-landed in Utah on September 8, 2004, after a design flaw prevented the deployment of its drogue parachute. The crash contaminated many of the sample collectors, and although most were damaged, many of the collectors were successfully recovered.

EVA Development Flight Test-02

The Extravehicular Activity Development Flight Test - 05 consists of the payload bay hardware elements of Detailed Test Objective (DTO) 671, EVA Hardware for Future Scheduled Extravehicular Missions.  EDFT - 05's main objective is to demonstrate International Space Station (ISS) on-orbit, end-to-end EVA assembly and maintenance operations.  The other DTO's included in this test are DTO 672, Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) Electrical Cuff Checklist and DTO 833, EMU Thermal Comfort and EVA Worksite Thermal Environment.  Another objective is to expand the EVA experience base for ground and flight crews.  Two EVA's will be performed on this mission to accomplish these DTO's.
The portside-mounted EDFT-05 hardware is in bay 7 and consists of the Orbital Replacement Unit (ORU) Transfer Device (OTD), a Pitch/Yaw Worksite Interface (WIF) Fitting, and Flight Support Equipment (FSE) to the sidewall carrier.
The starboard-mounted EDFT-05 hardware consists of bay 2 Portable Work Platform (PWP) components including the Articulating Portable Foot Restraint (APFR), Temporary Equipment Restraint Aid (TERA), and Work Station Stanchion (WSS).  Bay 7 contains the ORU Simulator and Carrier Assembly (OSCA) consisting of a Battery ORU Simulator attached to the Cargo Handling Interface Assembly (CHIA), and the Dry Carrier (DCC) Simulator.  Bay 8 houses an adapter plate with WIF's and a mounting location for the cable caddy. 
During launch and landing EVA equipment stowage requires orbiter middeck locker space and the starboard Portable Stowage Assembly (PSA).
Prior to scheduled EDFT - 05 activities, orbiter cabin pressure will be lowered to 10.2 psi and the standard EVA prebreathe protocols started.  EDFT - 05 activities require two crew members  to perform two full-duration EVA's and one crew member to provide Intravehicular Activity (IVA) support.

EVA Development Flight Test 02 - EDFT

The tests are designed to evaluate equipment and techniques and buildexperience among astronauts and ground controllers in preparation for assembly of the International Space Station. Past EDFT spacewalks have evaluated equipment ranging from the labeling to be used on the exterior of the stationto the nuts and bolts to be used as connectors.
